Here's a good look at a typical travel situation. The thrower is trying to break the mark with a forehand, but the marker is right there on him. After he pump-fakes once, he shifts his body weight and drags his left (pivot) foot. The result? He is able to break the mark. The marker never notices the extra extension the thrower got from dragging his foot, and play continues - with a significant advantage gained by the offense.
